Juan Filhiol correspondence, 1794-1881.

The collection contains French transcriptions and English translations of letters (1794, 1796) from Baron de Carondelet and Marquis de Maison Rouge concerning conflicting land claims in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. Letters comment on relations with the Osage Indians and the settlement of new immigrants in Louisiana. The transcription of a deed (1836) transferring property belonging to Jean Bres of Ouachita Parish is included. Transcriptions and translations were written by G. Filhiol in 1842. A copy of an issue (May 13, 1881) of "The Columbia Herald," Columbia, Louisiana, is available on microfilm only.
